Kilkelly Ireland (Irish Song)

아일랜드의 감자 기근 때 아일랜드를 떠나 다른 곳으로 이주한 사람들이 많았는데,

Kilkelly도 그것을 배경으로 하고 있습니다.

이 작품이 생겨난 배경에는 Peter Jones라는 사람이

어느날 아버지에게서 한 뭉텅이의 편지를 소포로 받게 되었습니다.

그는 그 소포에서 1800년대 중반 그의 증조부가 감자 기근 때 미국으로 옮겨온

그의 조부에게 30여년간의 보냈던 편지들을 모은 것이었습니다.

그리고 그 편지에는 아들에게 고향의 소식 -

다른 가족의 이주, 결혼, 태어나는 아이들, 농사에 대한 것 - 을 알려주고 있으며,

아들에게 자신이 얼마나 그를 사랑하고 있으며 그를 보고 싶어 하는가에 대한 이야기

그리고 아들이 고향으로 돌아와 주었으면 하는 내용들로 되어있었습니다.

그리고 마지막은 그의 형제가 그에게 아버지의 죽음을 알려주는 것으로 끝이 납니다.

Peter Jones를 이 편지들을 바탕으로 해서 노래를 작곡했는데 그게 이 곡입니다.

실재로 있었던 편지를 바탕으로 써진 것입니다

헤어진 가족에 대한 애뜻한 마음 때로는 원망

그리고 무사함에 대한 안도감등

수많은 느낌이 교차하는 가사입니다.

1845 - 1850년에 걸친 아일랜드의 감자 기근(Potato Famine)은

당시 아일랜드의 인구의 약 12%를 죽음으로 몰아넣었습니다.

뒤따른 가난과 질병을 벗어나기위해 많은 아일랜드 사람들은

이민의 길을 택했고, 그들 대부분은 미국에 정착했습니다.

영국의 침략과 지배, 고향을 등지고 타국으로의 이주...

아일랜드 역사는 일제시대와 북간도로의 이주를 겪은

우리 역사와 비슷합니다.

and now she's got six of her own.

You say you found work, but you don't say

what kind or when you will be coming home.

I'm sorry to give you the very sad news

that your dear old mother has gone.

We buried her down at the church in Kilkelly,

your brothers and Brigid were there.

You don't have to worry, she died very quickly,

remember her in your prayers.

And it's so good to hear that Michael's returning,

with money he's sure to buy land

For the crop has been poor and the people

are selling at any price that they can.

I guess that I must be close on to eighty,

it's thirty years since you're gone.

Because of all of the money you send me,

I'm still living out on my own.

Michael has built himself a fine house

and Brigid's daughters have grown.

You say that you might even come for a visit,

what joy to see you again.

I'm sorry that I didn't write sooner to tell you that father passed on.

He was living with Brigid, she says he was cheerful

and healthy right down to the end.

Ah, you should have seen him play with

the grandchildren of Pat McNamara, your friend.

And we buried him alongside of mother,

down at the Kilkelly churchyard.

He was a strong and a feisty old man,

considering his life was so hard.

And it's funny the way he kept talking about you,

he called for you in the end.

Oh, why don't you think about coming to visit,

we'd all love to see you again.
